Short description of error
Blender will freeze after using the Cycles rendered viewport for a bit on a mac with the Metal Blender backend.
Domonstration of Blender freezing with Metal backend.mp4
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
User Preferences
, ensure Metal is selected as your GPU backend. (Note: This is the GPU backend for Blender. NOT the Cycles render device)This issue does not occur if the OpenGL GPU backend is used. At least from my testing.
@mano-wii , can you check?
How long more or less does it take for it to crash while you rotate the view, move and duplicate the Cubes?
Does it make any difference to use CPU or GPU in Cycles?
Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/
Go to File → Defaults → Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you still can reproduce this issue.

The issue has kind of gone away for me. I will explain what I mean by "kind of gone away" down below.
Should we close this report? Or should we leave it open just in case I get more information?
Blender usually freezes after 10-30 seconds of using the Cycles viewport. And it didn't matter if I was using the CPU or GPU for rendering in Cycles. All that mattered was I was using the Metal backend for the Blender interface.
I did try downloading the latest version of Blender from the Blender website (3.6.0, commit date: 2023-03-27 23:56, hash:
16576beb222a
), and loading factory defaults, this did not fix the issue.I then rebooted my Mac and tested again. The issue was gone.
Extra information
This issue first started a few weeks ago, but other issues were occurring on my Mac unrelated to Blender, and I hadn't seen anyone else report this issue, so I factory reset the Mac in hope that this issue and the other ones go away.
After the factory reset, the freezing issue continued and I made this bug report.
I have rebooted my Mac a few times between first making the report and now, and it hasn't resolved the issue before.
Based on my testing, it seems the issue might be with the Metal GPU drivers or something? I don't know if there's much that can be done on the Blender side.
There was a recent fix that caused Mac to freeze.
I'm not sure if the 2023-03-24 build already had the fixes, but it's a possibility.
If it has no activity for more than 1 week, it will be closed.
I've kind of found out what's causing the issue. There's a intense GPU app that I've been running in the background. The issue with Blender freezing only occurs while that app is also running. (This issue may occur with other apps as well, but I don't have many intense GPU apps on my Mac)
I have decided to build a debug version of Blender and run it through Xcode to see if I could get more useful information out of it when it freezes.
Once Blender freezes, this error message appears in Xcode and keeps repeating.

This could be a driver bug, or it could be a issue with Blender that's exposed by the strain put on the system by the other app, I'm not sure which.
If there's anything else I could help out with in trying to pin point this issue, please let me know.
Note: I'm not a confident developer or proficient debugging. If you would like me to get more information for you, please provide step by step instructions.
I will close the report as #106401 is a similar report, and was fixed, and I couldn't reproduce the issue with my limited testing.
