Huge lag in Image Editor/Render result window when zooming in/out on images, be it a default scene in blender or any other blend files I've tried. See attached video.

This is probably a duplicate of #106092. Can you try the latest daily build of 3.6 and verify if this is the case: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

The zooming is almost smooth with a small window size on 3.6. But it still feels very laggy if the image editor window size is enlarged on my 4k monitor, whereas the lagging is almost unbearable on 3.5 even with a small window size with no image opened.

Are you saying that 3.4 is still obviously faster than 3.6 with a 4k window? On my 4k screen I can't quite notice much difference either way (Windows + nVidia here).

Yes. It's quite noticeable. Maybe it only happens on Linux? See attached video.

Can you upload a similar video showing what it looks like with 3.4? Generally performance issues aren't tracked here unless there's a large regression from a prior version so having a 3.4 video comparison might help.

Sorry, my mistake. It's actually the same with 3.4.1. Smooth on small window size, but laggy if maximized. Looking into it, I found that the latest version that works flawlessly for me is 3.0.1. From 3.1.0 on, the drawing of the Image Editor took a small regression. Zooming in and out feels a little laggy on maximized, but barely noticeable if you don't compare it carefully to 3.0.1. And you can see from the video for 3.1.0, window maximizing animation shows this black margin/border around the window which is not present with 3.0.1. And from 3.3.2, it took another regression. Zooming in/out feels very laggy. That's all I've found from my testing of the official releases. Hope it helps.

3.0.1 is a long time ago, I remember image editor has the engine reworked once, but I'm not sure if it was before or after 3.0.1.

I can't replicate the problem here.

@Jeroen-Bakker, does that ring any bell?

There are already plans to improve towards 3.0 performance. No need to have another report for it.

3.5.1 will have same performance as 3.4.
