Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
With this library file:
node_group_dependencies.blend
set_materialnode-tree-> the object should get the magenta material assigned
Just want to point out that this seems to be a recent regression, I added the latest working version I tested in the description.
Can confirm, will check.
