System Information
Operating system: Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS x86_64 (X11 session, XFCE) AND Windows 11
Graphics card: NVIDIA Quadro K5100M

Blender Version
Broken: 2.9~3.6
Worked: assuming none

Short description of error
alt-tab to Blender main window while a file dialog is opening seems to give focus on main window, and if you press S then you will be invoking the scaling operator but no way to actually do anything except pressing esc, and then the file dialog confirm row is gone (I assume it exits the file selection operator), while the scaling operator is still running.

You could right click on a blank place in the 3d viewport to exit that operator, but continuous grab makes it harder since the file dialog is quite big on my screen.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open Blender
  • Menu->File->Open
  • alt+tab to another application
  • alt+tab to Blender's main window (The file dialogue should be on top of it)
    • Or simply clicking the main window's title bar.
  • Press S, you can see you actually invoked scaling operator on the object (well any other key should also do it I guess).
  • Click inside the file dialogue, seems to be registering.
  • Press esc, you now exited the file opening operator, if you didn't click inside the file dialogue, you will exit the scaling operator, but if you did:
    • The dialogue is still there
    • The scaling operator is still running
  • If you can move your mouse to a blank place in the 3d viewport, right clicking it can exit the scaling operator.

Note if you click blender from "minimized window bar" place to activate the window, it will not work.

Could be a problem with X11 or XFCE as well, just want to see if any linux guys could reproduce the issue.

Looks like it affects X11 KDE/Kwin too. Blender 3.5

Actually, I can screw up the file browser without alt+tab:

  1. Menu->File->Open
  2. Click on the title bar of Blender's main window to focus it
  3. Press S to scale
  4. Click on the file browser
  5. Press escape while the mouse is over the file browser
  6. Right-click in the Blender main window
  7. Click on the file browser again
  8. Watch the buttons disappear

Interestingly, the dashed line scaling indicator draws on top of the file browser for me.
Also, I use a one click to focus, second click to raise policy in Kwin, in case that makes any difference.

Guys I can even reproduce the problem on Windows with @Imaginer 's method... So something a bit weird is happening with blender's window manager/event system. The modal operator should technically block stuff from the other window other than the file browser but evidently it doesn't.

It's not a big problem in regular use [ most scenarios no one should really notice this ] but yeah... I can see there could be a potential confusion when there's multiple windows across monitors
