Short description of error
Currently when linking an asset datablock from a library, making the datablock local does not clear the asset status, creating a new asset implicitly.
Not so much a bug, but I just talked with Julian Eisel about this and he agrees that this should behave differently.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • link to material asset from a library file
  • localize the material datablock

@JulianEisel Just want to bump this again, we have to address this for 4.0 imo and it doesn't seem very controversial nor difficult to me

I had this happen to me too and didn't realize why. Since the Gold project folder structure is also used as an asset library, it slowly piled up with duplicates of assets.
@JulianEisel Would be great to fix this for 4.1.
