Dark bars interior cycles renderings with M1 GPU and light tree #108011

Broken: (3.5.0 also 3.6.0 alpha May 17, 06:04:17 e27cb91442, Apple Silicon)

Short description of error
A repeated horizontal dark bar is drawn in interior renderings. Looks like a half transparent stripe pattern. It is tile size specific and scaled to size of the render tiles. See rendered examples. I tend to say the top 15-20% of a tile is darker than the rest.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
The error occurs only when using M1 GPU and activated Light Tree.
When using M1 CPU rendering the error is gone as well as when using M1 GPU with deactivated Light Tree.
I get it only in interior scenes. If there is open sky I was not able to see any flaws.

Looks like it is some kind of a cache thing on the local machine.

  • I noticed the stripes are not present anymore when deactivating the sun.
  • Furthermore its specific only for a certain sun position.
    a) It's present at 11.50 time (via sun position add-on).
    b) Changing the sun position e.g. to < 11.49 or > 11.51 there are no stripes.
    c) Changing back to 11.50 the stripes are visible again.
  • When coping the packed blender file to my second Mac and rendering it, they're no stripe pattern visible. Not at 11.50 or anything else.

So it looks like there is something locally stored / cached causing the stripes. I can reload the blender file on my first Mac again and again: the stripe pattern is every time visible. On my second Mac same settings it's not.

Not very familiar with mac systems. @mano-wii , can you check?

I'm not sure what's going on and what is meant by "something locally stored / cached".

I've seen similar but older issues involving mixed CPU+GPU rendering where the GPU was done with OpenCL.
By chance, in the preferences, did you mark both options in Metal?

Note that for the report to be fully triaged (and forwarded to the Cycles team), we first need to replicate the issue. Could you provide a simplified .blend file where we can visualize the problem?
