[in object mode the object outline does not seem to be showing despite being enabled plus in edit mode vertex edge or face mode not showing any selection or unselected items only noticed in 4.0 daily date 30.5.23]

Workbench Next shouldn't affect this.
It's not even active unless you explicitly select it in the Scene panel (instead of EEVEE/Cycles).
Did you happen to have Overlay Next enabled as well?
If that's the case then this is expected, Overlay Next is in a very early state and most features are not implemented yet.
