Unexpected bone rotation behaviour #109098

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22621-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.0 Core Profile Context 23.4.3.230420

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.7, branch: master, commit date: 2023-05-22 12:03, hash: 659c307f2502
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error

When Selecting a Bone to Rotate on Pose Mode, the first instance of Bone Rotation is not being 'free' (Global) by default, but 'locked' on some other (Local?); even though I've got Transform Orientations on Global

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Started a new project;
  2. Added a Bone (Armature Object);
  3. Went on Pose Mode;
  4. Press [ R ] to Rotate randomly (Transform Orientation is already set to Global by default);
  5. Realize it's not Rotating on Global, unless Pressed [ R ] a second time (so to Toggle between Local/Global/etc.), but shouldn't be the inverse?

I do not know any configuration in Blender that would change this order of functionalities, as it never happened to me before (although I've recently changed my OS); so I suspect it's a bug from later Blender LTS 3.3.7; I used to use LTS 3.3.1.

Hi, I'm not sure I could replicate the issue:

  • The file is in Edit mode, the bone in edit mode will rotate to a minimal twist state \if not constrained, and when rotating it freely the rotation along the local Y is gonna change.
  • In Pose mode, when rotated freely, the bone is not twisting. (Tested on 3.3.7)
  • Pressing R again in pose mode or edit mode will both toggle the rotation to an "Orbit" mode rather than going to global/local, so not sure what your intention is. Do you want to get the R R rotation on bones the first time you press R?

Hello, YimingWu

Thanks for the reply; I've re-opened file, indeed I left it on Edit Mode, little mistake; however, I've checked that the unexpected Rotation is happening on all three Modes: Pose, Edit, Object. So, it is not Bone-related only (as it happens to the Armature Object), and also I've tested on a new Cube Mesh Object on that Blend file. Same strange Rotation behavior.

Yes! I want the Rotation to spontaneously make the free, "orbit" movement for the Selected element; however, it seems to insist on starting Rotating by being Locked on some (Local?) Rotation Axis, at least until [ R ] is pressed again (then it goes Global, free/orbit).

Hope you can find the culprit.
Best Regards;

Oh, I guess what you meant was you want R to "trackball" and R R to "regular rotate"?

You could add a key binding for 3D view and set the operation as ransform.trackball, and set the key to R, and remove the default "rotation" key binding.

I'll close the issue for now since it's not actually a bug. But do tell us if it works or not. Thanks!
