Bevel breaks UV and other things #109101

System Information
Operating system: Window 10
Graphics card: RTX 3090

Blender Version
Broken: At least since 3.3 and onwards to 4.0 alpha, but earlier as well as far as I can remember
Worked: Don't know

  • Using bevel (both modifier and ctrl-b) breaks the UV in different ways. Some UV edges will get detached from each other even though they really shouldn't be (green circles in my screenshots) and when setting Miter Outer to Arc some faces that should be in one place appears in other places (red circles is where they should be and blue is where they turned up instead).
  • Having tagged edges to being UV seams will unexpectedly move those edges to the new most outer edges in the bevel instead of staying in the original middle edge making a new fast unwrap to fix the bad UV not possible. The same happens with edges with bevel weights and probably other edge data as well (red and blue lines along the edges in the viewport)
  • Also applying a bevel modifier will pin some UV vertices for some unclear reason.

The moved UV faces and split edges do happen even without the bevel modifier applied, but I had to apply it in my screenshots to be able see the actual bugs in the UV editor, and then also apply a subd modifier to make those split edges slightly clearer since we don't (yet? :) ) have a way to visualize UV borders in Blender.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Do a bevel on a more complex shape and the bugs will turn up. But I guess it's easier to just look at my attached .blend and my weird object that I made to try to replicate some models I had breaking at work :)

My error report have stuff that ain't in those (like the arc and pinned vertices), and also those haven't had any activity for years, so it feels like those are just 100% forgotten. These bugs really are breaking for working with bevels and UV and should be fixed ASAP :)

@Gurra Bevel is unlikely to receive updates during the development of the 2nd version #98674.

Yeah okay, a bit frustrating that it have taken years so far :) I have been bothered by this bug for a long time but it wasn't until I did some heavy modelling at work when I realized that I was having to spend hours redoing the UV because of this. But at least nice to see that it's being worked with, hope it won't take too long!
