System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 531.79

I've looked a bit everywhere in blender and on internet, and it seems there is a function missing to re-open the left panel of the timeline if you have it folded/slided off.

Usually you hit "T" to slide tools on/off of the left, that could be a solution, but in theory if you can remove this panel by clicking on the side and sliding, you should expect that doing the same in the oposite direction would bring/slide it back into existence.
I think it's the same thing with the graph editor, and it seems a bit arbitrary why the panel wouln't appear if you open a new one of these windows.
Like some areas don't display this side panel, and only for the timeline, and some do, it's all quite arbitrary

Ok I found a hack that allows to re-open it:
switch the window to dope sheet (not nla, and not graph.) and and long as one of the dope sheet menu has the left side panel on, switching back to the timeline at that moment re-opens the side panel. this doesn't work with nla or graph editor.
The dope sheet is able to re-open all other closed left panels in any sub-menus of the dope sheet, and any other animation window.
It is still a seemingly buggy behaviour though, as this is not controllable, it will re-open you left panel on any other animation window even if you do'nt want to, and the expected behaviour to re-open this panel would still be to slide in back in place from the left side of the window.

Hi, actually an arrow is there to expand the channel region. Does it work for you?

wow that's strange, I never saw this arrow, I tried again and like in my screenshot above I still don't see it:

It looks kinda familiar, but if I've seen it, it was probably quite a few blender version ago, maybe 2.8. Maybe an addon deactivated it. I deactivated all my addons recently so don't seem like it. Doesn't sound like something that would be toggleable in the prefs either. really odd.
Anyway if that's just me there's the dope sheet hack.

Could you try factory reset?: File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings
Maybe startup file is affected?

Damn you're right, I just try to load factory settings, and the arrow appears. It's probably something in my preferences then, as when I open a new file to get my startup file again, the arrow remains here, so it's not my startup file itself that ha sthe issue. still sounds like a bug though I guess. Not sure what could be the root cause, I will not loose all my prefs over that anyway haha.
It's probably only me anyway, so no problem, thanks again.
(I guess we can close the ticket as we'll probably never find the root cause of this disapearing arrow.)
