Mesh Edit Mode: Selected verts don't light up #109542

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 Home 22H2
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce gtx 1080

Blender Version
Broken: 3.6.0
Worked: 3.5.1

Short description of error

I have a mesh that was created over a year ago and tweaked since. It has made it through numerous updates.
Now, when I open my file in 3.6 and go into edit mode for that mesh, I can select, move and modify verts/edges/faces but they don't light up or show any indication of being selected.

I can only see my selections if I turn off Shape Key Edit Mode (use_shape_key_edit_mode) in the properties panel.

Also, in edit mode when I turn on Display Face Normals (but not vert or edge) it causes blender 3.6 to crash, but not 3.5.

I tried to replicate this issue by adding a sphere (in 3.5), giving it shape keys, copying over the drivers from the other mesh and turning on use_shape_key_edit_mode, then opening the file in 3.6, but I couldn't replicate it.

I turned all of my plugins off, problem still there.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Open file in 3.6, select wolf object, press tab, select any verts
