Blender refusing to open due to OpenGL 3.3 error on NVIDIA graphics card that should support it #110087

System Information
Operating system: Windows 11
Graphics cards: Intel UHD 750 (integrated) and NVIDIA RTX A4500

Blender Version
Broken: 3.5.1
Worked: 3.5.1

Short description of error
While using my NVIDIA graphics card in Blender after a computer restart or turning the computer on, I will be able to use Blender normally for some period of time. This could be hours, or even just a few minutes until Blender will randomly crash, stating "Unable to recover from a kernel exception". From then, any attempt to open Blender will produce the messages shown in the image.

Blender will crash on startup, with the command prompt producing the following messages.
Screenshot shows an image of a startup after the crash has occurred, mentioning OpenGL 3.3, despite the NVIDIA graphics card's ability to support that version of OpenGL.

As for reproducing the error, I can't find some instant way or anything that happens to trigger it.

I have tried:

  • Installing the newest drivers for my NVIDIA graphics card with clean installs multiple times, as well as the newest drivers for the Intel UHD 750 graphics processor.

  • Uninstalling and re-installed Blender itself

  • I've also had this same issue in Blender 3.5

  • Disabling the NVIDIA graphics card, and while this worked, I was no longer able to use the NVIDIA for rendering at all, making the program extremely inconvenient and slow to render or use

  • Disabling the Intel graphics card, which had no effect

I have seen other reports which match my description, but any fixes they have suggested I have not been able to use, and this has been an issue for the past few months.

Hi, thanks for the report. I guess you've multi-monitor setup or tablet connected to the primary device?

Please open Blender's installation directory and double click on the blender_debug_gpu.cmd. This will start Blender in debug mode and create log files. Try to reproduce the
error again. Once it crashes or you close Blender manually the Windows Explorer should open and show you up to two files, a debug log and the system information. Add them
to your bug report by clicking on the upload button as shown in the screenshot below or via drag and drop. Please also upload the crash log located in C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp\[project name].crash.txt (or simply type %TEMP% into the path bar of the Windows Explorer).2019_12_04_upload_icon_developer_blender_org.png

Hello and thanks for the response! I don't have any extra monitor setup or tablet connected to the primary device. My monitor is currently attached to the port on my PC instead of the graphics card, but I'm guessing that wouldn't make too much of a difference with this issue.

Currently I haven't been able to reproduce the crash but I can send the system information I got after starting a project and then closing it manually after some time, while following the instructions listed. Once I am able to reproduce the crash, I'll send those if needed.

Currently I haven't been able to reproduce the crash

Hi, can you still redo the crash/OpenGL error locally?
