Installation fails when desktop permission to write is denied #110419

Short Description

Blender setup error : An error occurred while attempting to create the directory DESKTOP_PATH
Options are Retry or Cancel.
Selecting cancel give a confirmation prompt and then rolls back the installation.

I do not want every program I install to create icons on my desktop so have remove permissions to prevent this which is why this error occurs. Even so setup should not fail simply because a desktop Icon can not be created.

Interesting... I'd suggest giving it a "skip" option, but considering this may be from a unified script for all files, it may consider not being able to write certain files as installation failure (which often times is). So maybe having a check box up front will be more helpful.

Hi, thanks for the report. I tried this by editing the desktop permission from: Desktop > context menu > Properties > security tab > check deny box
This completes the installation process but one warning message appears (failed to create blender lnk) and desktop shortcut is not generated.

Could you share the way you've disabled the desktop permission?

Guess we could add a checkbox like other installer to decide the creation of desktop shortcut.

I am the only user that has any permissions on my desktop folder and I have Full Control

I open windows explorer and right click desktop >> Properties >> Security and click edit.
