Blender Crashes on Render (Save As), then refuses to start #110814

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

Blender Version
Broken: 3.6.1
Worked: N/A

First observed with the attached file. I tried to save a png image render from it; when I clicked "Save As," Blender crashed and then... wouldn't open. It seemed to initiate startup, because the little black window that usually notified me that it was reading my userprefs.py file would blink into existence just long enough for me to register what it said, then close itself and act like I hadn't clicked it.

Restarting my computer fixes the problem temporarily, until the next crash. The crashes are inconsistent, but seem to happen only when I hit main menu items like Open or Save. This includes previous versions, apparently, as I still had 3.5 installed and it does the same quick blink.

The only thing I could think of was that that Read line in the black window referred to finding the userprefs file in C:\ when I installed everything into M:, but I tried copying the required path over to C:\ with no effect and also it gives me that same message when it's working and starts up fine.

I also tried repairing the 3.6.1 install, and uninstalling/reinstalling, to no effect.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

Hi @Michael-Weston , when it crashes, do you have crash logs and system info files (as indicated here)?

It is possible that maybe your disk configuration might confuse blender. Do you have network disks or other unusual virtual partitions?

@ChengduLittleA Ah, I didn't know about that. As one of my attempted fixes I deleted everything in the Blender Foundation folder, so I think if they were there they would be gone now.

I don't have any virtual partitions, though; I just have multiple physical drives installed, and M is the one I use for most programs.

@ChengduLittleA not sure if you saw this, but in addition to my previous reply, when the error happened after my deletion of everything, I scanned both my C and M drives for anything with the name "crash" in it and nothing relating to Blender came up. It doesn't seem to be generating those for these crashes, if that's possible.

(closed the issue by accident, I'm still having this problem I just hit the wrong button)

I see... Interesting. Not sure why it will prevent subsequent starts, some states must have changed in the system to prevent the program from starting.

Is it that anytime you open any file browser in blender (via open/save/save image/import/link etc) you can experience crash?

Have you got any special privileges set up in some directories?

That's part of what's baffling to me.

Yes, it appears that any file browser command has the potential to cause the crash, though it doesn't happen every time; as far as I can tell, it's a complete crapshoot when it will actually happen. I just had a nice streak for the past week or so, after uninstalling, deleting the folder, and reinstalling, where I opened, saved, rendered, imported addon scripts, etc with no problems - only to have it crash today when I tried to open preferences.

Even weirder: when I gave it a try an hour or so later, I could open Blender. But I retried opening preferences and it crashed again.
(ETA: I just restarted, opened Blender, and installed the addon I wanted through Preferences with no issue.)

I also just now tried reinstalling (This time to my E drive, which I realized is where I put my other Blender versions), and even on a fresh install it won't start up without a reboot.

when I tried to open preferences.

This is even weirder so it's more likely to be the window manager's issue.

and even on a fresh install it won't start up without a reboot.

Could you try some new versions like 3.6.2/4.0?

Ah, I hadn't considered that and I didn't know 3.6.2 was out, I just got on to 3.6.1.
I'll try loading that up and see what happens, I'll report back.

@PratikPB2123 I have a tablet and a multi-monitor setup, but I've only observed this problem on the multi-monitor setup.

Thanks. Uninstall tablet drivers from system if they are present by any chance. see if that solves the problem.

Funny you should mention this - I actually uninstalled and reinstalled the tablet driver twice as part of troubleshooting a separate issue. I'm not sure if the problem has stopped - since it happens at random it's difficult to tell - but I haven't had it happen since I updated to 3.6.2. So maybe one or the other fixed it? We'll see.

Suggestion of "unistall tablet driver" came from older reports. Problem was fixed for users after uninstalling driver :)
Anyways, this may not be the case for you.

Good to know :)

So, an update:
In 3 weeks it hasn't happened to me. But it has happened to a couple of people who posted on my Reddit thread about it. Today, one of them commented thus:

I figured it out! I opened a debugging session in Visual Studio and it caught the error. Was an exception in wintab32.dll, which handles drawing tablet stuff. Went to delete that as suggested by Huion, my tablet's maker, and noticed that DLL was in use by Logitech's mouse software. Closed the mouse software and Blender immediately started right up, without even deleting that dll.

So it's something with the drawing tablet functionality in blender conflicting with other things, like Logitech's software.

Thanks for sharing. I don't think mouse should use wintab.dll
Anyways, I think we can close the report since the crash is not appearing on your system anymore (and possibly wintab.dll is the culprit).
