Real Time Compositor Doesn't Work with Image Viewer #111477

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22621-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 536.99

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.6.0, branch: blender-v3.6-release, commit date: 2023-06-27 08:08, hash: c7fc78b81ecb
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
when compositing an image sequence (not a render), real time compositing only works in the viewport, and does not work in the Image Viewer, which most people use to work with composites.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Set up a composite only blender scene, load an image sequence and do a color tweak or other Real-time composite friendly node to the viewer. Then use the Image Viewer set to Viewer to preview changes They are still laggy. Should the image viewer not be able to handle real-time compositing?

RealTime compositing only works in a viewport, which seems odd as a compositing pipeline. I imagine most users when using Blender as a compositing tool would choose to harness the image viewer to do their previewing since it has histogram and scopes, etc.

Andrew

I think this is just that the compositor module haven't got around to implement that into the compositor interface region. May or may not be doable though.

hi, thanks for the report. Are we talking about preview in viewer node?: image

No, sorry for the confusing title. I adjusted it. I would simply expect real-time compositing to work in the Image Viewer, but it currently only works in a viewport, which is strange and unexpected behavior. Why would I not want real-time compositing where I'm looking at my composite? ;)

Real-time compositor is expected to draw the output in viewport.

Still I'm not understanding the reference of image viewer :/
Do you mean viewer node?

@OmarEmaraDev , can you check?

That's because there is a memory GPU<->CPU round trip in order to display the preview image. This is just a temporary implementation and the GPU compositor is still experimental, so expect this to get much faster and realtime once we are done with it. So this is not really a bug.
