Ambient Occlusion node with image texture #112556

System Information
Operating system: macOS 12.6.8 – 16GB
Graphics card: Apple M1 8/4-4

Blender Version
Broken: 3.6.3 RC
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

When I mix an image texture (here a PNG) with Ambient Occlusion node, its not working, or results a weird render at least.
In the render-preview the image is disappearing, but in the final render is there but partially and broken (i think).

Attached a screenshot and a very simple blend file.

I hope I am the idiot and doing something wrong, but after a full week I didn't find the answer to this strange behavior.

Edit: it seems an earlier resolved problem is back: #94050
If I switch to CPU-rendering, its working fine... :(

Edit2: If I turn OFF MetalRT(Experimental) in Preferences, its working fine!

Seems to be working just fine here, both cycles and eevee. So this could be specific to Apple.

Yes, as I wrote in Edit, it is a 2 year old issue (#94050), which is came back somehow... If I switch to CPU rendering, working fine.

MetalRT (Experimental) in Preferences was guilty. Turned OFF and its working.

@vintezis, I tried on a M2 Max MacBook Pro running macOS 14 and couldn't reproduce this - I wonder if this is an OS issue? It might be worth retrying on macOS 13.x or even macOS 14 (...today is the last day of the macOS 14 beta before the stable release tomorrow).

Did you try turn on the MetalRT switcher? (I don't know what is doing exactly, but after I turned off, the AO mix with image texture is working fine)

I guess there was some fix or other change in the Metal drivers that made this work. We are already planning to bump the minimum required macOS version for MetalRT for other reasons in 4.x. Given that this is only an experimental feature in 3.6, finding a workaround for these older macOS versions is not something we can spend time on.

I think we should bump the minimum macOS version for MetalRT version in 3.6 LTS. To either macOS 13 or 14, depending which is the first one that works.
