System Information
Operating system: Linux-6.4.6-76060406-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.35 64 Bits, X11 UI
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 535.104.05
Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2023-09-19 08:47, hash:
78315faf8fbd
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected) don't know - also happened with last week's build
Short description of error
UI freezes, blender unresponsive, can only be closed by killing the process -but if it happens during render, the render keeps going
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
it appears to be not connected to any specific frame in the animation. The project-files are containing (large) alembics
Hi @christian.schlaeffer , does blender resume responding once the render is finished? It could be possible that the UI thread simply wasn't scheduled in the OS due to heavy work load on the GPU. Does viewport render preview freeze the UI as well?
Also, it could be helpful to give us system info file, use
Help > Save System Info
. Thanks!blender is not responding after the render has finished - and just to re-emphasize: this does not only happen when rendering, but also just seemingly randomly during normal work, regardless of which viewport mode.
I initially suspected something was wrong with my alembics, but neither could I pinpoint a frame, nor did it stop my 500 frames from getting rendered.
It does seem to be using nvidia card to run. Could you tell us what driver did you install? Is it the official linux driver from nvidia download, or is it the driver that comes with your package manager? It's generally considered better if you use the official nvidia driver.
NVIDIA-SMI 535.104.05 Driver Version: 535.104.05 CUDA Version: 12.2
they came with pop OS and were updated by pop OS and are up to date, at least according to pop OS....
I see, Then you probably would need to uninstall popOS nvidia driver and use nvidia official driver. Try using
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-xxx.xx.run
file downloaded from nvidia official website. It usually have less trouble running blender and a lot of other things.sadly, that did not fix it
Could it be due to shortage of memory? memory leak?
Have you checked memory/hardware utilization when the application stops responding?
I have 256GB of RAM and 24GB of VRAM. the render peaks at about 8GB of VRAM usage.
the hardware utilization drops to basically idle - except when I hit on one of the crashes where blender keeps rendering. for ease of use, I use the GPU-monitor to determine whether or not to kill blender and retry, or leave it running. In those cases, I just leave it running until my sequence has finished rendering.
Does this happen with factory settings (in case any add-on is interfering)?:
File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings
