Compositor movie not rendering if cache is full #112804

System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux
Graphics card: RTX 2070

Blender Version
Broken: 3.6.2
Worked 2.93

Short description of error
The Viewer output in Compositor becomes buggy after some time of using when using input videos in the graph. It seems like it happens when too many video frames are loaded in the memory. Is there a memory leak in such case?
The problem disappears when rendering (F12 Render Image). This is actually a temporal fix. When the problem occurs I always hit F12 just to get rid of it until it appears again. Rendering probably clears the cache?
The result on the backdrop starts to seem like weirdly translated or some of the used videos completely disappears.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Compositor, tick Use Nodes and enable Backdrop
  2. Import two 4K videos via Image node and set the number of frames to input length
  3. Use Mix node to blend the videos by factor 0.5 so both are used
  4. Connect the result to the Viewer node
  5. Keep moving along the timeline to render new views in the backdrop until the result starts to be buggy

Attached archive contains an example project. When I keep pressing the right button to create new views, one of the videos disappears after some time.

Edit: The file was too large so here it goes.

Thanks for the report, @ichlubna.

Apparently you forgot to attach the "example project"?

I tried to replicate the problem using 4k videos from https://www.pexels.com/search/videos/4k/ , but Blender had no problem with them.

  • Could you specify the duration and resolution of the input videos you are using?
  • Are you experiencing this issue with any specific video format, or does it occur with all video formats?
  • Have you monitored the system's memory usage while using Blender?

Apparently you forgot to attach the "example project"?

Sorry, it was too large so I added a link.

The example videos are in the project archive. But it happens with others as well.

  • Have you monitored the system's memory usage while using Blender?

Did it now. It starts when the memory is used at 11 GB in total. 7 GB was probably already used. When I hit F12, the memory gets freed again.

Thanks for your guidance. It seems like the limit is actually 4 GB of the Memory Cache Limit in the Video Sequencer section in Preferences. I changed it to 10 GB and the problem does not appear anymore. When I change it to 1 GB it appears sooner.

I still think that the behavior I experience is a bug. The cache should get freed and rewritten, right? The mechanism seems to be buggy in my case and probably places the new frames at wrong positions.

Can confirm. You can also set cache to 0 to disable it if you don't need it.
