Crash when baking texture (with GN modifier) - fixed in 4.0, request to backport to 3.6 LTS #113226

Short description of error
I was trying to bake the textures of a building with more materials into one texture. When I prepared project for baking and clicked: bake, the pc started working and after a while the blender was killed by operating system for SEGFAULT (in Linux). So I have opened the project in Windows to see the same behaviour. It is a problem with this project only (see project file below).

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
All things to bake are already prepared. Do not click on anything else (in shader editor I selected on the 2K texture to be baked on). Only click on the bake button and watch it crash.

I am of course sending the problematic file and the crash log. Also a commandline report if needed:

I am sorry for the lost file. It was too big. Here are some news:

  • I tried the baking on Blender 4.0.0 beta and it did not crashed. But also did not work as intended.

  • Also I found what was causing the problem. There was a geometry nodes modifier which was turned off in viewport (and so I forgot about it). Whith the modifier removed it worked as intended. So it was probably trying to bake the texture of multiple geo meshes.

  • I'll try to send the file again. This time through google drive link. The file size is 277 MB: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D2lZicy4HW4mEcX1WQyGTRHw4g_-12OB/view?usp=sharing

The geonodes modifier is still enabled for render, if I disable that for rendering, I am getting seemingly expected results:

Hi. To your question: well... It did not bake the texture. It is because of the geometry nodes that I forgot about. It was trying to bake the textures for the geonodes output.

I have many students unable to bake a texture in Blender 3.1. It doesn't crash, it just doesn't do anything. I have looked and researched many options to correct, but have been unable to find anything works. Can anyone help with this issue?
