System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.15.0-86-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.35 64 Bits, X11 UI
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 535.113.01

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.6.4, branch: blender-v3.6-release, commit date: 2023-09-25 13:24, hash: 21bfc5e7fe3f

Short description of error
Meshes that have been previously sculpted on, suddenly have seemingly random vertices that don't react to the sculpting brushes anymore, without any masking information being present.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Start sculpting.
  2. Witness the insubordination.

Linking the object to a new scene (in the same file) and continuing sculpting there works, so the problem doesn't appear to be on mesh or object level.

Just discovered that there seems to be a disconnect between the automasking settings in the pie menu and those in the Brush menu. Disabling the settings in the pie menu fixes the issues, but it's not clear to me whether this disconnect is intentional.

This is a commonly reported problem. People discover the auto-masking options in the brush settings first and assume that's the way to use them. But these are advanced settings for rare use.

To avoid this try to

  • Change auto-masking in the brush settings ONLY when customizing the behavior of a specific brush (like authoring your own brushes)
  • Change the auto-masking in the scene (via the pie menu or the header) for frequent and general use.
