Eevee Next - poor performance on macOS #113857

opened 2023-10-17 18:37:44 +02:00 by Juan Romero · 7 comments

System Information
Operating system: macOS Ventura 13.5.1
Graphics card: Apple M1

Blender Version
Broken: (4.1.0, 6b0769c448c8-darwin.arm64, alpha-main, 2023-10-17)
Worked: 3.6.5

Short description of error
The viewport performance of Eevee Next is much worse than Eevee, When playing the timeline I get like 6fps while if I switch to Eevee is 29 fps.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Just open Blender 4.1.0, switch to Eevee Next and orbit the camera or play the timeline

I see the same performance drop, more specifically the shadows option seems to be the main culprit. Enabling that gives about 1/3 the frame rate compared to when they are disabled.

Testing a bit more it seems to be related to the samples, it stalls while computing the samples and when finished it performs all right

Hi, any improvements in fresh 4.1 build: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/
@mano-wii , can you check?

I don't see any significant improvements compared to earlier builds.

I don't see any significant improvements compared to earlier builds.

I can confirm that EEVEE Next is slower than EEVEE Legacy, although the extreme values reported were not observed.
To test this, I had to use a heavy scene like the Barbershop because, with the default Cube scene on MacOS M1, the FPS appears to be limited to 60, regardless of settings.

Additionally, I compared the same scene on Windows using a Radeon RX 480, and the slowness exhibited a similar factor. Here's a breakdown:

EEVEE Legacy EEVEE Next
Windows 11 - Radeon RX 480 9.2 FPS 4.9 FPS
macOS 14.2 - Apple M1 1.2 4.2 FPS 2.1 FPS

It's not surprising to me that EEVEE Next is slower, as it aims for a more realistic rendering.
Another observation is that the shaders take considerable time to compile on MacOS, and we still encounter the 'Optimizing Shaders' step.

@JuanRomero, could you try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/
Also go to File → Defaults → Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you still can reproduce this issue.

(@fclem, do you have any insights on this issue?)

The last few weeks performance seems to have been improved a lot. In the worst cases, eevee next is still about 1/3 slower in FPS, but in some scenes it is actually faster now than eevee. The largest performance increase seems to be due to the automatic pixel size setting.

We are still looking into speeding it up. But I wouldn't keep this report opened since we arrived to a satisfactory level of performance.
