System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 536.23
Also reproduced on a diffrent Windows 11 PC

Blender Version
Broken by 45f3426559
Worked: version: 3.6.5

Short description of error
Creating many instances with Geometry Nodes causes 3D Viewport to lag and use up memory (that's fine). Lag and high memory usage persists even after removing those instances (i don't think that should be happening).
Node setup:
obraz
Memory usage is multiplied for every open 3D Vieport Area, when the bug happens (3D Viewport Areas created after reproducing the bug don't lag). Memory usage and lag dissapears after closing affected 3D Viewports (changing Areas, switching Workspaces).

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on attached .blend file:

  1. Select the plane
  2. Enter edit mode
  3. Scale the plane to increase the instance amount until blender starts lagging (for me, it's around 1 milion isntances) (or do anything to increase instance amount)
  4. Cancel scaling with right click
(optionally: unplug Geometry Nodes from Group Output)
  5. Try moving around in the 3D Viewport

Not able to reproduce this in 4.1 and 4.0.

I can reproduce some residual used memory and the lag. Don't think, that lag should be acceptable. Memory is questionable.

Can confirm persistent memory as well.

fwiw I can't repro this. No lag on my machine (did not really look closely into memory usage)

I think i can confirm that it's a regression, but it's a bit difficult to compare directly. in 3.6 i can ramp it up to 2.5GB and it drops back down to <700MB after scaling back. In 4.1 it goes down somewhat but remains above 1.5GB.

Could you give a try to #114857?
It fixes the issue for me, but just to be sure.
The builds will be here when ready: https://builder.blender.org/download/patch/PR114857
