A common workflow during retopology is marking important loops with material colors.

Unfortunately the Retopology overlay only supports a single theme color.

First design using material colors

The situation could be improved by adding an option to use the material colors for the retopology overlay.
Each face then uses the RGB values of the material colors and the alpha value of the theme color for the correct transparent look.

Updated design

After a first implementation and some debate around using faceset instead of material color, this is the updated design:

The integration of face sets would be beneficial for these uses:

  • Selection Sets
  • Color customization of face loops & grids (Like for the retoplogy overlay)

Not a lot is needed for this for now:

Essential

  • Add an edit mode overlay option to display face sets in edit mode
  • If the retopology overlay is enabled it will automatically use the face set colors instead of the single theme color
  • Add essential face set operators =
    • 'Assign New Face Set' (Creates a new face set from the selection. Also new random color. Same behavior as sculpt mode)
    • 'Select Similar -> Face Set'

Long Term

  • 'Select Linked Pick' operator support to use Face Sets
  • Operator support for hiding active/inactive face set(s) (Active = Under cursor)
  • Unify with the generic attribute overlay options
  • A way to set a specific face set color

Discussed this with @Jeroen-Bakker. He could have time soon to look into this.

Do you have an example file setup that I can use during testing?

A give it a thought, something I think is still missing is how to handle opacity for these cases. Using the user pref color alpha is just to hidden. Using material color alpha influences other drawin modes.

Possible options:

  • Use a fixed value that isn't changeable by user (not ideal, but does not clutter interface)
  • Add opacity slider (per viewport) when material colors are selected. (think best option, but not yet in this design).
  • Add opacity setting in the user preferences (bit hidden and could conflict with user pref retopo color.
  • Or what is written by this design (reuse the alpha of the user pref) which is quite hidden to the user.

For the first iteration I will go for the opacity slider when material colors are selected. A good default value will be determined during testing.
@JulienKaspar any preference or should I keep to what is written in the description (reuse user pref alpha value)

I think it would be interesting to see if the alpha value from the preference color is enough. I agree that it's too hidden if people want to change it.
But it could also be the case that people never need to change the opacity. It's better not to add yet another overlay setting until we need to.

Personally, I never alter it. I only once increased the alpha value to 0.2 in my theme preferences but left it at that ever since.

I updated the task description to the latest design.

I'll close the current PR which implement the old design.
