something's wrong with eevee's SSR #114899

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GT 730/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 391.35

Blender Version
Broken: version: any version newer than 3.1.2
Worked: 3.1.2

Short description of error

  • with SSR on, a material using principled BSDF shader will always have a glossy surface as if the roughness was at 0.
  • seems to work as it should when clear coat weight is not at 0.
  • enabling screen space refraction in material settings also seems to fix the glossiness glitch but creates another, seemingly involving shadows and/or normals.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. add mesh > monkey
  2. add subd modifier (level 2)
  3. add a new material to the mesh

Thank you, @Alex_K, for your bug report about an issue you are experiencing with Blender's Eevee renderer and its Screen Space Reflections (SSR).

From your description, it appears that you are encountering a probable bug. For the developers to understand the issue better and resolve it effectively, it would be helpful if you could provide the following additional information:

  1. A simple .blend file demonstrating the issue. Make sure it is as simplified as possible while still showcasing the problem.
  2. A step-by-step description of how to reproduce the issue from starting Blender to observing the faulty behavior. This clarification is crucial to ensure the developers can see the issue on their end.
  3. Any additional screenshots or screen recordings that clearly demonstrate the problem, if you can provide them.

Once we have this information, the issue will be escalated to the developers who can delve into the problem.

Meanwhile, I recommend you check if the issue persists with the latest stable release or daily build of Blender. If it doesn't, updating Blender might solve your problem.

thanks for your reply. I've edited in additional info and a blend file in the initial post.

Could it be it is related to the GPU? I can't replicate the problem.

Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.23585-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics ATI Technologies Inc. 4.6.0 Core Profile Context 23.20.13.01.231019
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 528.79
Version: 4.0.0 Release Candidate, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-11-10 13:29, hash: `c688b038473a`

Maybe we have to wait and see if anyone else experiences this.

In the meantime, if you haven't already, please double-check if the drivers are up to date.

To upgrade to the latest driver, see here for more information: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/gpu/index.html

unfortunately, this graphics card isn't getting any more driver updates. so yes, the driver has already been the latest version for years now.
I guess i'm stuck with 3.1.2.

Hi, thanks for the report. This is likely a driver bug, we already have a report for this case: #102423
One workaround is mentioned in above task that you may want to try but it does not sound like a actual fix: #102423 (comment)
