Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.0 and up, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-11-13 17:26, hash:
878f71061b8e
Worked: (3.6.5)
Short description of error
As of 4.0.0 release I cannot edit meshes anymore. I'am encountering a consistent crash (consistent in the way that it eventually always happens) when editing in edit mode. Complexity of the mesh does not matter. After a few minutes of manipulating the mesh the application will close immidiately without any freezes or stuttering beforehand.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Go into edit mode and start creating and joining vertices/edges. The crash occures faster if the object has this modifiers on it: Mirror, Armature, Subdivision Surface
[Based on the default startup]
I am aware that my CPU is quite old, hovever from asking around I found people using models like the i7 3770 and having no issues. Were there specific changes to Blender that may couse this? Only edit mode is affected. I have tested with all addons disabled.
The exception code in crash log is stating: UNKNOWN EXCEPTION in module KERNELBASE.dll
Random crashes in edit modeto Crashes in edit modeCant tell much from the logs.
Are you using
ALT
to navigate while transforming?Could you share a file where this happens (including reliable reproduction steps from the point of opening that file?
No, I'm not using ALT.
I'am attaching an example of a file that I imported from 3.6.5 and tried to work on.
To reproduce the crash one needs to enter edit mode and do some standard modelling work like deleting/creating vertices, creating faces, edges and those sort of things - no fancy operations. For me the crash will occur after ~15 minutes of working on this file.
However the crash occures on every file I try - created an empty project added the default cube and started messing with it - crash occured after some 20 minutes of toying with the shape in edit mode.
I'am working on a default settings blender 4.0.0 - I haven't imported the 3.6 settings.
Both Windows 10 and GPU drivers are up-to-date.
Something inside blender changed and and it's cousing issues for my setup. 3.6.5 and earlier versions never had this kind of a problem.
I wasn't able to reproduce crash. Unfortunately we require exact steps to reproduce the issue. This may involve a bit of experimentation, but it also could be random and hardware related.
In any case, check if this happens with alpha build from https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/
I tried the 4.1.0 alpha.
The crashing still occurs. I tried turning off the fresnel for edit mode that was introudced with 4.0.0 but it didn't help.
At this point I'am certain that this is a hardware/driver related issue. I'm afraid it isn't reproducible unless on the same CPU model.
Going back - It would be interesting to know what change in the blender 4.0 could be cousing such an issue. So maybe I could develop a fix on my own.

I also get a crash whenever i enter EDIT mode and i assume its related to this one.
I have narrowed the crash down to a asset library. If i remove them i do not get the crash. Im trying to isolate the blend file that causes it to provide a example but maybe in the mean time this information helps to find out what is happening.
EDIT: it seems to be caused by a blend file that can not be loaded and crashes blender when i try. Unfortunately i can not share this blend file here. I hope this information can help nonetheless to fix this issue.
During my efforts to figure out what's the couse of the problem i did these things on my PC:
As of right now I don't get the crashes anymore. Still I don't consider my issue fixed until I test for a few more days.
Any helpfull comment as why the problem existed before would be appreciated.
I have the same problem. I followed the steps outlined by orange-blossom, but it didn't help.

I tried running Blender through the console to see what's happening, so I'm pasting the content:

I am attaching the crash report file and system info. Hopefully, this will help resolve the issue in future Blender versions.
@orange-blossom Did the crashes reappear for you? Stack trace from @Dawid-Paterkiewicz is indeed same as yours. @Dawid-Paterkiewicz Did you check 4.1 alpha?
@iss In my case completely reinstalling the drivers did the trick. I have tested in long modelling sessions and the crashes didn't appear. The thread was reopened for @Dawid-Paterkiewicz 's case.
Allright, we can continue in this thread, but usually it is better to make new report. @orange-blossom did you use some special tool to remove old driver orwas it just plain reinstall.
@iss I used the display driver uninstaller from guru3D to completely uninstall everything related to graphics drivers from the computer. It was already mentioned in this thread.
Ah sorry, @Dawid-Paterkiewicz can you verify you used this tool to remove GPU drivers? I've heard this resolved bunch of issues reported in past.
Hey @iss!
I used the DDU tool (it's legit; I've used it several times) and followed the steps by @orange-blossom precisely twice.
I also installed Blender 4.1 and tested it for 5 minutes, and... I didn't encounter any problems.
For now, I've reverted to version 3.6.5.
@Dawid-Paterkiewicz It's bit strange, that only 4.0 has these issues. But I don't really have any more tests for you to conduct.
@iss I know, this is very strange, but I understand, it's not a stable release :) If I have the opportunity to start a new project, I will try the new Blender version. I saw today, when I started a new project in Blender 4.0 version, it crashed after maybe 7 minutes of modeling. That's 7 minutes more than editing my current project, which started in Blender 3.6.5 and I tried editing in blender 4.0.

Since my blender upgraded to 4.0, there has been some problems happened. I also experienced a stutter problem in edit mode, which seems to be related to modifiers, but none of my worse configured computers encountered such stutter problems before version 4.0.
Now when I perform simple operations, such as basic operations like rotating views, there is a chance that the interface will not respond, which usually lasts for tens of seconds to a few minutes. At the same time, the CPU usage of blender will increase abnormally from 12% under normal conditions to 70%~98%, which makes me worry about whether such frequent crashes will lead to computer damage. I want to know how to avoid such frequent no responding.
Hello,
I opened a new report for an issue similar to this. My blender crashes every time I go into edit mode. I click that button and the whole thing freezes..
Is there any fixes for it yet?
Try using other versions of Blender and attempt again. If a problem persists, investigate potential issues with your drivers, update them all, and try again. I resolved my issue by installing the next version of Blender.
Ah ok, I have the most up to date blender version. I even tried the 4.2 Beta to see if that makes a difference (it doesn't..) I'll try to update my mac drivers to see if that works but if it doesn't then what? I'm super new to blender (downloaded it yesterday and I've been hooked!)
Try using Blender 3.6.5. If the problem persists, you can search for a solution on Google or on this forum. Unfortunately, I'm unable to assist you further :(
Hello!
I downloaded version 3.6 and it works! I guess my laptop is just crap :( but it gives me an excuse to spend some money I don't have!
Thank you for you're help 🙏 ☺️
Good for you :) It's nice to hear that. Perhaps newer versions don't support your hardware, but don't worry. Blender 3.6.5 has the majority of functions to learn and achieve great effects ;)
@Dawid-Paterkiewicz hi, crash is still around in 4.2?
Hello, I haven't installed the new version yet. Maybe I will try it in 2-3 weeks. If that version gives me any problems, I will come back here with an update.
Hi there,
I encountered the exact same problem on MX Linux Libretto (Debian bookworm) using a HP EliteBook 830 G6 (Intel Core i5-8365U, RAM 16Go). Tried different versions (Blender 4.2, 4.0, 3.6). In sculpt mode, no problem. In edit mode, after just a few very basic changes, Blender crashes. Other than that, everything works perfectly fine both in Blender and in other applications. There definitely is something with edit mode that causes Blender to crash.
It used to work like a charm when I used Windows on the same device. The only changes I made since then is that I replaced the SSD to go full Linux.
