System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22621-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 545.84

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.0, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-11-13 17:26, hash: 878f71061b8e
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I am getting random crash sometimes when performing undo after using fill tool in 3D view paint mode with mask enabled. I can not reproduce on a non-production file I could share. Even stripped down version of production file doesn't repro it.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Crash report: Unit_Herital_APC.crash.txt

From the logs it seems blender cannot get the according image.

But cannot repro this in my tests either.

Could you share the .blend in a state where this still crashes?

Yes, I could at least try, but it's a production file so I can only do so privately.

@Rawalanche In this case you might able to reproduce this issue in your own simplified file to share?

I have shared the file privately with @lichtwerk as I didn't manage to repro it in a simplified file.

Here are repro steps:

  1. Open the Unit_Herital_Materials.blend and use Find Missing files to repath the files from the Textures subfolder
  2. Open Unit_Herital_APC.blend and repath few more missing files from the Textures subfolder
  3. Check no files are missing
  4. In Unit_Herital_APC.blend, select Axle_RL object
  5. Enter Edit Mode and select faces by M_APC material
  6. Switch to Texture Paint mode and activate Fill tool
  7. Click to fill
  8. Undo
    Result: Should crash.

Can confirm the crash, this is very much like #79373 (which was supposed to be fixed), will check further on this

The image being painted on does not have to be linked for crash to happen. The repro steps show it on linked image but it will also crash on local image (You can try either Emissive or ColorMetalAccent image, both of which are local). The reason I showed repro on a linked image was accident, because paint mode refuses to remember last selected image :(

The thing is that in Material mode, you are actually painting across multiple materials, so it could very well be that another material has a slot selected with a linked image (that was the case here), !115263 should fix this

The reason I showed repro on a linked image was accident, because paint mode refuses to remember last selected image :( The thing is that in `Material` mode, you are actually painting **across multiple** materials, so it could very well be that another material has a slot selected with a linked image (that was the case here), !115263 should fix this
