System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux

Short description of error
Upon trying to select my GPU in any way, be it through the render menu or through preferences, my PC freezes

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
(As of now, package is still broken, using the .appimage version 4.1 for this. Issue persists throughout all versions of 4.x)

Select "GPU"
[Hardware Freeze]

Open Blender
Open Preferences
Click on System
[Hardware Freeze]

This bug report does not contain a .blend file since it is not project-specific
This bug report does not contain a log file since I was unable to locate one, blender does not seem to create one since it doesnt fully finish crashing

What has changed compared to your other issue (#115312) where you could not even launch blender? Which exact build of blender are you using? Are you using an official one: the portable .tar.xz, the Snap, Steam?

Compared to the issue on the other issue (#115312) I am using the portable tar.xz

[blender-4.1.0-alpha+main.b24610053fbc-linux.x86_64-release.tar.xz]

This issue is not version specific, however it appeared the same time as 4.0's release, making me think that it might be related to how Blender interacts with the HIP-runtime, or perhaps the other way around

EDIT: I figured I should also mention that both Eevee (Legacy) and Eevee work without issue, aside from a one-time issue with transparent image textures which i could not replicate. It truly is only the moment blender has to directly interact with HIP

I would like to now add that after further testing, neither a downgrade of blender, nor the hip-runtime-amd package or both at once have resolved this issue, now leaving me to think that this issue may be connected to a third, yet undetermined package.

This time I have attached the blender.crash.txt so that maybe someone can figure out what exactly is going on here.

This crash log is written when I try to launch blender, since I have now been led to believe that both the launching issue and Cycles issue may be connected

I'm pretty sure this is being tracked on the Arch side: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/blender/-/issues/2

The issue there matches the LLVM 15 vs. LLVM 16 vs. Radeon driver fiasco that your crashing stack also has.
