System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 537.58

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: version: 3.6.1

Short description of error
Crash when rotating a bone in pose mode on a model with subdiv+solidify modifiers

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Load attached blender file (contains a single model with an armature)
Quickly rotate the already selected bone => causes a crash while rotating (in less than 3 seconds on my setup)

The crash does not seem to occur if subdivision modifier OR solidify modifier is removed. So it seems that the combination of both modifiers is needed to reproduce the crash.

Thank you for the report.

I could not repro the crash on a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060.

To help us troubleshoot the problem, could you please try disabling GPU subdivision in Blender? Go to Blender Preferences > Viewport > Subdivision.

If disabling GPU subdivision prevents the crash from occurring, it could indicate a GPU-related issue.

I tried several things, but unfortunately I still see the same symptom:

  • disabled GPU subdivision as you recommended
  • disabled few addons that were active
  • loaded default factory settings
  • updated GPU driver
I can still reproduce the issue.

Furthermore, I got few more occurences of the crash when:

  • clicking on another bone
  • switching from pose mode to object mode

However, as opposed to mentioned in the initial report, the solidify modifier is not involved in the crash, I can remove it.
The crash only happens when the subdivision modifier is present.
I removed the subdivision modifier and recreated it, the problem reappears.

It's really weird that you cannot reproduce it since you have same file and same blender version (4.0.2 as a reminder). I don't see how the setup could impact this.
Is there a way to catpure some logs somehow ?

Note: this file is an old file that came over several iterations of blender versions.

[EDIT] I installed blender freshly on another PC , opended this file and was able to reproduce the crash the same way (rotate/move any bone)

Ohh! I can confirm this issue in version 4.0.3.
However, this issue has already been fixed in the development version 4.1.
I believe it was fixed in commit eb399678f5. This commit is on the list of fixes to be backported to version 4.0 already.

This issue may have a similar cause to report #115366

While 4.0.4 isn't ready, you can try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

I confirm that:

  • blender 4.1.0 alpha fixes the issue
  • blender 4.0.3 RC does not fix the issue (c40f63bb98)

Thank you !
