System Information
Operating system: macOS-13.6-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Metal API Apple M2 1.2

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I’ve encountered a consistent issue across multiple versions of Blender (4.0.2, 4.0.3, 4.1 Alpha) related to the Python API, specifically when using gpu.types.Buffer to create a new Buffer object. Regardless of the format I declare (e.g., INT, UBYTE, etc.), the returned buffer object is always of the FLOAT type. This behavior is not observed in the long-term stable version 3.6, where the buffer object correctly corresponds to the declared format.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender (versions 4.0.2, 4.0.3, or 4.1 Alpha).
  2. Access the Python console or run a Python script.
  3. Use the gpu.types.Buffer API to create a new buffer object with a specified format UBYTE (other than FLOAT).
  4. Observe that the returned buffer object is of the float type regardless of the specified format.

>>> from gpu.types import Buffer
>>> Buffer("UBYTE", (1))
Buffer(FLOAT, [0.0])

Hi, thanks for the report. Seems fine here on Windows: image
Could be Mac/metal specific. @Jeroen-Bakker , can you check?

Also works as expected on Linux, seems this may be macOS spesific.
