Seeing a lot of glitchy "hangs" and poor performance in Edit mode #116560

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 546.33

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.3 Release Candidate, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-06 08:16, hash: c40f63bb98b9
Worked: (3.6.7)

Short description of error
Glitchy behavior and "hangs" in Edit mode when using the sliders to change values (e.g. Number of Cuts in the Loop Cut and Slide panel)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Add a Cylinder to the scene - give it about 100 vertices.
  2. Go into Edit mode and add a loop cut (Ctrl+R) - Right-click to confirm
  3. In the "Loop Cut and Slide" panel, click in the "Number of Cuts" field and drag your mouse back and forth several times - notice the lags and hangs - sometimes Blender will hang for several seconds.

This behavior in 3.6.7 is silky smooth - no issues whatsoever.

NOTE: I'm noticing a lot more instability in Blender 4.0.X, including frequent hard-hangs and events where Blender just "disappears" (like when going to save a rendered image and other places). It's not always in the same place or after performing the same operation. I can usually recover a file and perform the exact same sequence without issue. I'll report more as I can isolate it to a specific set of actions.

Hi, could it be due to indexing in large asset libraries: #115372
Can you remove asset library path from preferences then monitor the performance again?

Hello! I went one step better and did a clean install of 4.0.3 on another system and did NOT see the lag (no asset libraries on this other machine) - so, yes, it appears there might be a connection.

It is interesting to me, however, that on the system where I am seeing the lag in 4.0.3 with the asset libraries, I do NOT see the lag in 3.6.7 with the same asset libraries loaded.

I hate making generalized statements because they're not terribly helpful, but for some reason 4.X has seemed a lot more unstable than 3.X ( I'm hearing this from friends who use Blender as well ).

ok, then it's same as #115372, closing.
