System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 536.40

Blender Version

  1. Broken: version: 4.1.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2023-12-19 00:09, hash: 69d22a42d06f.

Worked: Never.

Short description of error
The Smoothness property of Edge > Subdivide has twice the effectiveness when the mesh has Shape Keys.

The left cube does not have shape keys, the right cube has a Basis shape key, both are in edit mode simultaneously for demonstration purposes:

Initial objects Smooth factor: 1 Smooth factor: 2
image image image

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Duplicate the default cube.
  2. Add a shape key to only the duplicate cube.
  3. Enter Edit Mode.
  4. Select the entirety of both meshes.
  5. Run Edge > Subdivide.
  6. Adjust the Smoothness value in the operator panel to be above 0.0.
  7. Observe that the mesh with a shape key deforms more, as if the Smoothness value is doubled only for itself.

Alternative without using multi-editing:

  1. Enter Edit Mode with the default cube.
  2. Select the entire mesh and run Edge > Subdivide.
  3. Adjust the Smoothness value in the operator panel to 1.0 and remember how the mesh looked.
  4. Undo.
  5. Enter Object Mode.
  6. Add a shape key to the default cube.
  7. Enter Edit Mode.
  8. Run Edge > Subdivide again (it should use the 1.0 Smoothness value from before, but if not, set it to 1.0 again).
  9. Observe that the mesh has deformed much more than last time.
  10. Adjust the Smoothness value in the operator panel to 0.5.
  11. Observe that the mesh looks identical to when the mesh did not have Shape Keys and a Smoothness of 1.0 was used.
