System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: 2xNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 546.33

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I get an OpenGL error and Blender crash when opening file with UI element spanning graphics cards, for example a render view on my other graphics card.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Needs a machine with dual graphics card setup.

  1. Start Blender.
  2. Open the Rendering tab.
  3. Right click the header, choose Duplicate Area into New Window.
  4. Drag the new window to a screen showing output from another graphics card on your system.
  5. Save the file.
  6. Close Blender.
  7. Open the file.
  8. The error should appear.

Hi @superrune,

The error message you shared is quite explanatory. It seems that at least one of the GPUs connected to your system does not support OpenGL 4.3 or higher, which is required by Blender.

Based on this information, it appears that this issue is not a bug but rather a limitation of the hardware configuration. To resolve this, you can try plugging all your monitors into your primary graphics card or installing the latest driver for your graphics card. These steps might help in resolving the issue.

However, it seems worth tagging this report as Needs Info from Developers to get their opinion. They can provide further guidance or clarification if necessary.

I don't see how this could be the case. If you see the tech specs above, I run a dual GTX 1070 setup. The cards are identical, running the same drivers. Surely they wouldn't be running different versions of OpenGL? According to GLView, they should both be on OpenGL version 4.6.

Also, I have to add: Blender seems to support my monitor setup just fine. I can work for hours with the UI extended to all monitors. It is ONLY when opening a file that this error appears.

@superrune hi, do you have monitors connected to same graphics card? AFAIK this is a known Windows OS/OpenGL issue when monitors are not connected to different graphics card

I assume when you write "known Windows OS/OpenGL issue" that it's a Blender-Windows-specific issue, and not a general OS issue?

Yes, I have three monitors and two cards. A common setup AFAIK. All programs I use (Resolve, Clip Studio, Nuke) work fine with this setup, and Blender works fine as well. It is just the loading of files that gives an error.

I have to underline the oddity that it only happens when I load a file, which it what makes me think this is a bug. Blender is working fine with this setup, and I can move my Blender windows wherever I want when I start a new file - or when start with a file with no spanning Blender windows. So I can move a Blender window to whatever monitor I like as I work, but as soon as I save I need to close the spanning windows.

(edited for typos)

https://archive.blender.org/developer/D13885 might clear few things.

Possibly the "blend" file has more than one window saved
