System Information
Operating system: Linux-6.7.0-060700-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.38 64 Bits, WAYLAND UI
Graphics card: AMD Radeon Pro W6600 (navi23, LLVM 15.0.7, DRM 3.56, 6.7.0-060700-generic) AMD 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 23.2.1-1ubuntu3

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.1.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2024-01-14 20:33, hash: 4effcd33a3f9
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Linux, the Ubuntu interface does not work anymore. No possibility to reduce or close the Blender interface window and much more

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Once the Blender program is open, its window bar stick to the upper bar of Ubuntu. No possibility to detach it. I can, also, no more reduce the window and I can no more see when the object is selected, the contour color does not change. Result, with this latest version of Blender, I can not use it at all anymore.

Hi, thanks for the report. Not a linux user myself so a small screen recording would help to understand the issue you're observing.
As workaround maybe you can close the console window to terminate blender

I am in Asia, so my time is limited for today. I hope my graphic can help. For Linux it is a very important bug. I hope it is not a conflict with DirectX. I had to reset Blender to "Factory Settings". I had also conflicts with one or more "addons".

Now I can see the yellow outlines.

It is only assuming! The other versions of Blender work! I will try to find, which version of Blender still work on Wayland.

P.S. The "blender-4.0.2-linux-x64" works without problem, but there is an issue with "blender-4.1.0-alpha+main.0f8c8e475a11-linux.x86_64-release".

Blender should be graphics driver agnostic. Nor directX or Wayland

While I'm not on Ubuntu, I can't redo this problem with GNOME Shell 45.3 on Arch Linux.

  • Is Blender responsive?
  • Can you manipulate the 3D viewport?
  • Are all new windows that open also unable to close? (the file selector or preferences for example).
  • Can you close windows via Blender's File -> Quit.

It is at the transition on 16 January 2024 from the

"blender-4.0.3-candidate+v40.c40f63bb98b9-linux.x86_64-release"

to the

"blender-4.1.0-alpha+main.da6b45f9b831-linux.x86_64-release"

that the graphics and selection of objects on Ubuntu do no more work as usual with Blender!

So the modifications with the first version 4.1.0 cause the trouble on Linux.

My answers on the questions

Is Blender responsive?

Meanwhile, I made the remark that from switching from 4.03 to 4.10, it is then that the bugs appeared

As for use 4.1 today (blender-4.1.0-alpha+main.d068407a004c-linux.x86_64-release)
Blender is responsive

--- Can you manipulate the 3D viewport?
Yes! But...
1) The top bar from the Blender window sticks to the top of the screen in Ubuntu
2) I can move the objects in blender but, I do not see the outlines of the object highlighted to show that it is selected

--- Are all new windows that open also unable to close? (the file selector or preferences for example).
No! I am unable to close the window in Blender.

--- Can you close windows via Blender's File -> Quit.

Yes! I can close the window Blender's File -> Quit. Also, by right-clicking on the mouse. For me, situated at the bottom of the screen.

In Ubuntu when a program freeze, you can close any "freezed program" with the use of the "System Monitor" and then use the tag "Processes", where all the open programs are listed and in the listing select "Blender", click on it with the mouse and then ask to "kill" it. So we do not have to reboot each time when there is a bug! This spare time and the hardware.

Be careful, today Ubuntu was only with Wayland, it can no more work decently with the other graphic systems.

  • What version of ubuntu & gnome-shell are you running?
  • Can you check if this happens with any other user of LIBDECOR? (Any application using SDL2 for windowing).

I use Ubuntu 23.10.

I only use "libsdl2-2.0-0" on Ubuntu for SDL2.

I will install "libsdl2-image-2.0-0" and see what happen.
I ought to upgrade "gnome-shell-common" to version "45.0-1ubuntu2". This happens not automatically.

I do it now, and I will then let you know the results.

After upgrading the gnome-shell "45.0-1ubuntu2" the problems on Blender persists.

I thought to install Arch Linux on my system, but it has too many problems with their upgrades.

I will install all the "gnome-shell-extension" possible and see what happens.

If it helps, I will let it know.

With the version Blender 4.03, everything seemed to work normally, but with the upgrade to version of Blender 4.1, the interface of Blender, and more on my system went wrong.

I use Linux since 2006, and I stick to it. I never lost any data with it, and it is the most accessible to use, in any sense.

I installed all the "gnome-shell-extension" possible, to no use. It has to do with the graphics on Linux. I use AMD Radeon™ Pro W6600. Blender did not "see" the card, until I used version 4.03 of Blender. See the screenshot.

There is indeed a problem with Blender on Wayland. With Xorg, it seems to work. Blender works, with HIP activated on AMD Radeon with Wayland and not with Xorg.

Other problem, to activate Xorg instead of Wayland, is not possible on Ubuntu 23.10.

I would like if this is a bug in libdecor or not see: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libdecor/libdecor

If it is, it may be that the bug needs to be fixed there.

Some other things to try:

  • Start blender with window geometry: blender --window-geometry 0 0 800 800
  • Start blender with blender --factory-startup --window-border

Can you manipulate the resulting window in these cases?

Further, I would think if this is a common problem we would have many similar reports, could you try add a new user without any custom configuration to see if the error still occurs?

Is it wise use Gitlab, which moved from Microsoft Azure to Google Cloud Platform?

Ubuntu is based on Debian. You can find libdecor on Debian, with another maintainer, Christian Rauch, and on Gitlab, the maintainer is Jonas Ådahl.

https://packages.debian.org/sid/libdecor-0-0

As you noted, Libdecor is a Library for Wayland client-side decorations. You can have the latest version with the following repository, but you need Linux to retrieve it. For Ubuntu and Debian. To use the latest versions of it with Ubuntu or Debian can bring risks. The latest version on Ubuntu is 0.1.1-2. I got a warning of Ubuntu for the latest version, 0.2.2., that it breaks my sytem. So I can not install it with Ubuntu. :

You can find it on the repository, "ppa:christianrauch/libdecoration"

Since 27 weeks, it has not been updated. So since too long it has not been modified to be the cause of the troubles with Blender

Note, you can have all the Debian packages on this site:

https://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

As you can see over there, libdecor depends on several other packages, libc6, libwayland-client0.

But anyhow, Blender 4.03 works on my system. What have been modified with the advent of Blender 4.1 that suddenly Blender is broken on Linux?

I finally managed to make Blender work again normally with the latest version,
blender-4.1.0-alpha+main.b5a9c98e04fa-linux.x86_64-release. Taking note that it worked with the latest version of Ubuntu 23.10. I erased everything on my PC and reinstalled the latest version of Ubuntu 23.10 with the latest version of Blender. But, all this, let me not know the causes of all the troubles and why it worked with Blender 4.03 and not 4.10.

There may have been some configuration issue with your system. Whatever the case it seems likely this isn't a common problem or we would have other similar reports.

Closing.

I found another reason why it did not work correctly! I can no more activate the "HIP" on blender as before. Then today I can still not activate HIP and use the Graphics card, AMD Radeon Pro W6600, correctly, with Blender on Linux. Until now, the AMD Radeon Pro driver never worked with the latest versions of Ubuntu. I try to do it already for three years to make it working, but to no use except, before, until the cited bugs appeared.

As you noticed, I use an AMD Radeon Pro W6600 Graphics card. To be able to still use the latest builds of Blender, I installed Ubuntu 22.04 again, together with the "amdgpu-install_5.7.50703-1_all.deb" driver. Everything works almost normal. We have to wait the updates of AMD, to suit the latest releases of Ubuntu.

With the installation of several graphic drivers, I saw, that Linux also installed "Azure modules and its patents" from Microsoft on Linux. Is Linux still open source?

This looks to be unrelated to the first bug reported.

If older Blender's cannot be opened this is not something that we would fix in up-coming releases - so I think this report can be closed.

All has not been written with the development of Blender with Ubuntu. As Ubuntu is in development, it is advised to install also : libdecor-0-dev, libdecor-0-plugin-1-gtk with the Ubuntu system. So the troubles are indeed provoked by "libdecor"!

Once installed you can use Blender 4.01 almost completely, without trouble, except with some of the icons of the Gnome windows, but de menus in Blender are working.

It can be useful for the use or trying of a new add-on on Ubuntu.

@Artemile your replies here seem to hint that there are issues with libdecor, but it's not clear if there are issues to resolve on Blender's side.
