System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22621-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 546.17

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When using simple or linear subdivision multires displacement eraser does not respect the base shapes.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Create cube or use default cube
  • Add Multires modifier and sub with simple or linear
  • Use Multires Displacement eraser on edge
  • ????
  • Displacement returns to as if it's divided with the "subdivide" button.

I can confirm.
In fact, it is expected that this brush will restore the Multires Mesh Base when applied.

"Multires Displacement Eraser" was implemented in 478ea4c898.

I completely neglected the labels, I forgot to set them properly, sorry about that.
edit: just realize I probably can't set them anyways 🥴

I accidentally clicked on comment and close. It removed the "Status confirmed" label and added back Needs triage. Sorry for the mess.

Unfortunately, this is design limitation of the multires system. The multires is basically a displacement in tangent space relative tot he limit surface of a mesh (you can think of it as an infinitely subdivided base mesh). The Simple subdivision is actually displacement relative to the limit surface, and the Erase tool can not distinguish between "automatically" calculate displacement for the simple subdivision case from actually sculpted one.
