Dozens of useless white windows when trying to open a new window or open a file path #117305

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22631-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 546.33

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.1, branch: master, commit date: 2022-10-04 18:35, hash: rBb292cfe5a936
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
I recently installed a new windows machine. This time I want to use multiple versions of blender, I have a 3.31 and a 4. Downloaded the zip file and created a config folder for each version. The problem is that when I work with each of these versions a strange problem occurs, first of all the operations are much slower than on the old PC. Another problem is the appearance of white windows (many of them) every time, for example, I add a new work window or click save as or load a texture by clicking on open.To explain myself better I recorded a video of the problem, here is the link on YouTube
https://youtu.be/_gmRAr8svxo

I tried to solve these problems by doing this:
I reinstalled the video drivers with a cleaning with display driver uninstaller. Subsequently I downloaded the 3.3.1 and 4.0 zips and launched the executables by monitoring the %appdata% folder. The config files were correctly generated within it. However the problem remains. Blender only works with one window, I have 3 monitors and need other windows open during a project. For example, if I try to open 3 windows, 2 viewports and 1 shader editor, it generates another dozen useless white windows and if I try to close them, the work windows also close.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Download Blender version 3.31 portable zip file.
  • Launch the Blender executable file from the extracted folder.
  • Move the main window to another monitor
  • Add a New window

Observe that multiple white windows appear when trying to open a new work window.
Notice that if you close one of the white windows, the other work windows also disappear.

Note: Tested in multiple versions of Blender but this issue only occurs with the portable version.

there are some new problems, I tried to install the same version I used on the PC before 3.3.1, this time installing it I took the msi file from the blender foundation archive. I thought I would solve it but now I have the same problem so it doesn't depend on the portable files

The filename shown in the video, "blender-3.3.1-windows-x64.zip", indicates that this is version 3.3.1 even though it shows that it was downloaded on January 18, 2024. That is a version of 3.3 that came out on October 5, 2022. The latest version of 3.3 is 3.3.15, released on January 16, 2024. https://www.blender.org/download/lts/3-3/

The video shows you launching blender by double-clicking on "blender.exe". That is why you remark that you see a console window remaining afterward. This was a known problem caused by changes with Windows 10 and is fixed by instead launching blender with "blender-launcher.exe" instead, also included in that folder.

However, when I test with this same version of Blender in the same way that is indicated, I don't see the same issues with multiple monitors on an NVIDIA graphics card. It all looks normal to me.

How are your monitors connected to your computer? Your multiple monitors should ALL be connected to the multiple connectors on your RTX 3080 card, and nothing should be connected to any other card or connectors. This is because Windows only allows one video card to provide accelerated 3D services. I'm assuming you are still in the process of setting up this machine, as it seems odd that your third monitor on the right is shown as off and black.

I'd recommend checking that all your monitors are connected to the one video card, download a new version of 3.3 that has years of corrections, and then test again by starting blender by launching "blender-launcher.exe".

Yes, I have read that old versions of the archive are also updated. So 20 minutes ago I tried to download a 3.3.1 msi this time to install it thinking it would solve the problem but the installed version also starts but then the same problem happens.
The monitors are all connected to the same video card, each with its own displayport cable, same card, same monitors and same cables as the previous PC. If you saw a black monitor in the video it's because I set a black desktop background on all screens, but they are turned on. I attach screenshots of the msi version downloaded a few minutes ago for testing

Yes, I have read that old versions of the archive are also updated...

No, the file you highlight in the capture above is 3.3.1 and does not contain any of the changes over the last 2 years. You can see the modified date highlighted: October 5 2022.

Instead you should download a version from the page I supplied to you earlier at https://www.blender.org/download/lts/3-3/ and get the latest version that includes all the bug fixes.

Hi, thanks for your reply and sorry for my misunderstanding. I downloaded the 3.3.15 portable version and tried to launch it, but I have the same problem. Furthermore, before doing so I had a doubt as to whether this could be the solution because as written in my initial message, I had already tried to launch a more recent version, 4.0, which presumably should already have included similar updates. However, 3.3.15 also creates the same problem

I did. There are still some things unexplained here.

The title includes "Blender portable version" but you have not mentioned running a non-portable version. Do those work?

The first comment mentions this is all a result of you installing a new computer. Presumably your old computer ran Blender without issue? What happens when you run the exact version of Blender on your new computer that ran fine on your old one?

Within Blender you can select Help / Save System Info and it will create a file that you can add to a comment here, which will give us more information about your system

I also tried the non-portable versions. I tried versions 3.3.1 and 3.3.15 installing them with the installer, so NOT PORTABLE. I encountered the same problem.

As for the new computer, yes, it all started when I assembled the new PC with Windows 11. Luckily I didn't format the old system SSD so if I boot from that SSD everything works perfectly and the old version of Blender runs without problems on this new hardware

I attach the file system info
one produced by blender launched on the new operating system
One produced by blender launched on the old operating system

do c++ redistributable versions affect?
I attach screenshots of the versions installed on the old operating system and on the new one

So the title is incorrect, will remove the "portable version" part.

It is not necessary to use your old SSD to obtain an old version of Blender. You can download every single version from here: https://download.blender.org/release/

When you boot with the SSD and "everything works perfectly and the old version of Blender runs without problems" what version(s) of Blender is that?

If you are implying that the same version of Blender works when booted from your old SSD but does not work when you install on the new, then you have a problem outside of Blender.

In the meantime, thanks for your reply and your time. the old ssd runs with windows 10, the new one with windows 11. I also believe that the problem is not with Blender, I have believed so from the beginning. But I can't figure out what the cause is.
On this new SSD I performed a clean install using Christitus Winutil, I only used the recommended tweaks. There is probably some missing Windows component. But I can't figure out what

3.3.1

Ah. So 3.3.1 works correctly on this new computer using the old system software but doesn't work correctly with your new installation.

The first thing I would check is the version of the video drivers in case those are different. I think you are using the current version of the NVIDIA Studio driver, but you could always try their Game Ready version in case that works differently for some reason.

Already tried but the problem remains. I have attached some screenshots of the C++ redistributables, do they have anything to do with it? I had many more installed on the old machine.

Doesn't look like a bug in blender since same version works fine when launched from old ssd on new system.

Hi, thank you for all the support I received. I reset windows 11 to factory settings and reinstalled everything, now everything works perfectly
