Blender 4.0 has an invisible wall stopping the camera front moving further away from the selected object's pivot, when using a space mouse. #117314

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 546.01

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: 3.6

Short description of error
Normally when moving forward with a space mouse, you move forward. in 4.0 the camera softly stops and stays stuck when nearing the selected obejct's pivot

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
1 - in blender 4.0, select an object
2 - move forward.
3 - the camera is stuck and cannot move anymore, it's blocked by the selected objects pivot, like an infinite invisible wall.

It feels like it's something that's been added, not a bug, but it's a massive showstopper, you simply can't move in 3d ... only backward .... or only when not selecting an object, so cannot simply work in edit mode...

Hi, thanks for the report. Just want to confirm whether you've actually checked in 3.6? Because this can be observed with normal mouse scrolling or touchpad gestures in older versions as well: #93273

I don't have space mouse to verify, will ask someone after your reply 😅

Hi Pratik, thanks for your answer. Yes I double-checked as I was initially convinced it was a hardware issue. I'm still using 3.6 so was not yet aware of this behavior in 4.0.

It seems to be tied to the mouse wheel zoom stopping behavior, like if it was impacting space mouse too now. Which makes no sense as a space mouse doesn't move around a selection, but freely and infinitely in space.

But if does it all the time, even when not selecting anything, move forward for 1 second and it will stop, so that makes 4.0 absolutely unusable for a space mouse user.

Thanks a lot for any help.

I can make a comparative video to show how handicapping it is, but basically it's like if you could only ever walk two steps in life before being stopped. The only thing that works is moving backward.
The only way to navigate a scene is then by looking around, selecting an object and teleporting to it, kinda like a mouse and keyboard
And if you select something behind you, and try moving, you're violently pushed back behind this invisible wall. Basically half of the 3d world is forbidden, and it's the most important half, being the one in front of you.

Might be fixed already in main branch: 3eaf2b2e50
Can you check in 4.1 buildbot build?: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

Amazing yes this fixed it, that's a relief, I was afraid as not many people use a space mouse, it behaves perfectly after this fix.
Thanks for pointing it out ! (and sorry I didn't check the alpha first thing, will do next time.)

Closing then. There won't be another 4.0 corrective release since it's not a LTS version.
4.1 will be in beta state in few weeks and scheduled to release in March.
