Texture Paint - Fill Tool - Stroke Method 'Anchored': no cursor drawing on mac #117576

System Information
Operating system: macOS-14.0-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Metal API AMD Radeon Pro Vega 48 1.2

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: Hasn't worked since 3.0

Short description of error
Creating gradient fills on mac devices is unusable as the cursor for the stroke method doesn't appear in the viewports, particularly for Anchored. Other methods will display a cursor trail, however the gradient fill is erratic and unpredictable so you are unable to accurately use it. It is the same for both Linear and Radial Gradient Fill modes.

This bug has existed in Blender since 3.0.

[Update] On an M1 Macbook it appears to perform slightly better when using the Line Stroke Method, but it is not consistent. The cursor line will appear and disappear randomly. Turning on and off the check for the 'Cursor' option sometimes seems to help but it is unpredictable.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open attached .blend file or
    • Create a texture for the material to work on.
    • Go to Texture Paint mode
    • Select the Fill Tool.
    • In the Tools panel (on the left-hand side of the screen), in Color Picker, select Gradient
    • In the Tools panel, Stoke, Stroke Method, select Anchored
    • Enable Edge to Edge
  • Try to draw the line for a gradient in either the Texture Paint viewport or the 3D view port,

there is no visual feedback

So the problem is related to cursor/gradient line drawing and not about the fill operation.
@mano-wii @iss can you confirm on mac?

@PratikPB2123 Yes, that's correct.

However, today I thought to download and use OBS to capture the issue and bizarrely when setting the Stroke Method to Line it began to work consistently. I tried closing OBS and Blender and just opening Blender again, and the Line stroke method seems to work consistently now. I tested in both 4.0.0 and 4.0.2 and the same thing occurred but now I can't recreate the issue for the Line stroke method.

That being said, for the other stroke methods the cursor still doesn't display, so I'm not sure if that is intended behavior (that only the Line stroke method would display the cursor)

Germano Cavalcante changed title from Gradient with Anchored Stroke Method for texture painting is not functioning on mac to Texture Paint - Fill Tool - Stroke Method 'Anchored' is without cursor drawing on mac 2024-01-30 13:41:03 +01:00

Thank you for the report, I can confirm the issue with the Stroke Method 'Anchored' not displaying the cursor in the Texture Paint mode on macOS.

It also seems that other stroke methods have inconsistent cursor display.
