Cycles: Objects disappear from render when using Cycles with MetalRT #117581

System Information
Operating system: macOS-14.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Metal API Apple M3 Max 1.2

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: never

Short description of error

  • Objects disappear from Cycles render when 'GPU Compute' is selected. Example: the pillows (Pillow_3_Plane.002)
  • The same objects show up in the Cycles render when 'CPU' is used or when I change the engine to Eevee
  • I believe the issue is related to the high number of objects in the scene. However, no memory warnings are displayed and the render uses 3354 MB of RAM, which should be very manageable for an M3 Max laptop

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • The file is too big to be uploaded here. Since the problem cannot be reproduced with a small file, I've uploaded it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/11BhiLQmemqTAuYSBqAPtAvSOAsBFOFWy/view?usp=sharing
  • I was not able to reproduce this error on a PC, only on a Mac. I've had it multiple times on separate macbook devices.
  • To reproduce issue, render current frame (150) in Cycles with the current settings (device = 'GPU Compute'). If the render is missing some objects (like the pillows) then the issue is reproduced

I can confirm a issue. (The issue I experience is different from yours, but it seems to change every time I render it).

As pointed out by the original reporter, rendering on the CPU, in EEVEE, or on the GPU in different operating systems (E.G. Nvidia GPU in my case), there are no issues. But rendering on a mac with the GPU with MetalRT (enabled by default on M3 chips) results in issues.

CC @Michael-Jones can you take a look at this? Just for reference, the issue seems to disappear when motion blur is turned off.

In the mean time, @Luis-Calejo if you would like to continue working on this project and rendering on your GPU, you will need to disable MetalRT. This can be done by:

  1. Select from the top of Blender Edit -> Preferences
  2. Select the System tab on the left of the Preferences window.
  3. In the Cycles Render Device tab, change the MetalRT option to Off

Thanks for the report @Luis-Calejo - I am able to reproduce this locally, and note that it seems to be related to motion blur.
