System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22631-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT ATI Technologies Inc. 4.6.0 Core Profile Context 23.12.1.231124

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: NA? same in previous versions (checked in 3.3LTS)

Short description of error
Adding Images as planes (with transparent backgrounds such as .png, .Gif, and .Mov) will not properly focus based on their location. If the Image is layered in front of the character, and the focus distance is fairly high (For my instance, 21M) Only the image that is overlaying the character is shown sharply. Anything off of the character is blurred as though it is part of the background.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Add object (Suzanne in file)
  • Add image as plane (any with transparent / alpha, preferably animated)
  • Camera should be facing character, and the plane should be anywhere between the character and camera.
  • Check Depth of Field under camera options, set Focus Distance to around 18-22 and set the F-Stop to 0.1 Depending on how far away your camera is, you may need to adjust, but simply adjust until your character can be seen clearly, and the background is unfocused and blurred. You should now see the plane image is blurred like the background, only around the character
