Linking two parented objects creates duplicates on library override #118311

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 551.23

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
If you have several objects parented to something in a Blender file, and then link these objects from s different Blender file

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Link a cube object from the example file
  2. Go to the object properties on it and shift click the link button to create an override
  3. Unparent and unlink it from the empty that just appeared (bonus bug?)
  4. Move the cube object a little bit!
  5. Link a second cube object from the example file
  6. Go to the object properties on it and shift click the link button to create an override on the second cube

Result:

A second copy of the first cube (and the empty) appears.

Expected:

I really don't want to see the empty parents getting linked "for free" at any point...

PS. What takes 1.3mb in an empty example file with three cubes? There's no good way in Blender to find out... 🙈

Thanks for the report. I can confirm. #111465 might be related

  • If you link an object, you will always automatically link its parent as well. And when you create an override, you will always also create an override of the linked parent.

  • If you create several overrides of the same linked data... you get several overrides, yes, that's by far the main reason liboverrides were designed to replace the legacy proxy system!

No bugs here.
