System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 546.01

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727

Issue still present in 4.1.0 Beta, 4.2.0 Alpha, and 3.6.8 LTS as of time of ticket creation. Oldest tested version was Blender 2.80 where issue is still reproducible. No known working version.

Short description of error
When performing weight operations in weight paints (such as Smooth, Quantize, Clean, etc), if the paint mask mode was changed while in weight paint mode, changing settings in these weight operations will make the operation only respect the masking mode that was active when first entering weight paint mode.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Requirements: Model with vertex groups, and existing Face/Vertex selection for paint masking (provided)

1.) Enter weight paint mode, notice the current weight paint mask mode is 'None'
2.) Change your weight paint mask mode to 'Face Mask'
3.) Perform a weight operation (Weights > Smooth)
4.) Change settings in the dialogue box that pops up. Notice the weight paint mask mode reverts back to 'None'
5.) Undo, and change weight paint mask mode to 'Face Mask' once more
6.) Leave weight paint mode and go to another mode (object mode for example)
7.) Go back into weight paint mode. Notice that upon entering, 'Face Mask' is the active weight paint mask mode
8.) Perform a weight operation (Weights > Smooth)
9.) Change settings in the dialogue box that pops up. Notice that the smooth operation respects the current paint mask mode
10.) Change the paint mask mode to something else and try changing settings in the smooth operation dialogue box again. Notice it reverts back to 'Face Mask' mode as that was the active paint mask mode upon entering Weight paint mode.

This issue is present on all weight paint operations, not just smooth.

Expected behavior
All weight actions should respect the currently active paint mask mode regardless of when it was changed. The user should not have to leave weight paint mode and re-enter just for these operations to respect the paint mask mode.
