Blender Version
Broken: 4.2 Alpha
Worked: This issue has occurred for some time, i can't remember a time where lossless compression works perfectly across multiple media players.

Short description of error
When I use lossless compression, while rendering mp4, the video ends up failing depending on the OS where it was generated and the Player.

Rendering using the OS Ubuntu 22.04:
The result video is blank in "VLC" media player and on the phone. The sound is good, only the video has an issue.

Rendering using the OS Windows 64bit:
Players such as "Movies & TV app," "Multimedia Player," and "Legacy Windows Media Player" couldn't play the video.
"BS.Player" and "VLC" was able to reproduce the video without any apparent issues.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open attached .blend file
  • Replace the image indicated in the VSE strip by any other
  • Render the animation

The mp4 video should result in black while using media players like "VLC", or android phone media players, where as if you check constant bitrate, it results an an actual video which can be viewed across all media players without an issue.

Hi @Siah-2,

I tested the issue on Windows using Blender 4.2 Alpha and a different image (since the one in your attachment isn't packed), and I rendered the animation.

I encountered a similar problem where most players did not support the generated .mp4 file.
Players such as "Movies & TV app," "Multimedia Player," and "Legacy Windows Media Player" couldn't play the video.
However, I found that "BS.Player" and "VLC" was able to reproduce the video without any apparent issues.

So, I couldn't reproduce the problem exactly as you described. However, it seems that generating an unsupported .mp4 file for most media players when using H.264 lossless compression might be a bug.

Also I found this link: blenderartists.org: H.264 lossless output is not working

So I'm confirming the issue and I'll edit the description a little.
