Blender 4.0.2 crashes at subdivision #119265

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10, latest Updates and actual NVIDIA Game-Ready-Driver
Graphics card: ASUS Rog Strix NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 OC (See attached pic)

I still have the problem, that anytime, I use "Edit Mode/Edge/Subdivision" by more than 2, Blender 4.0.2 crashes with a spinning windows-circle and a "Blender is not responding anymore" error-message. I already disabled "Preferences/Viewport/GPU Subdivision". The error occurs even with the default-cube-scene is visible and no other objects are loaded. What other parameters can I change? Anybody else has the same problem and is there a workaround, to continue working, while the error is not able to be solved? It works fine at blender 3.6.5, but I have not installed the same addons there.

Is there a way, to get a list of installed addons as txt-file? I remember I did that 1 time, but I never ever found
the function again! Sniff

The subdivision-error occurs even at using "Edit Mode/Edges/Subdivision" after starting blender, subdividing the default-cube! Strange, that 128 GB RAM and 24 GB VRAM are not enough, to handle some simple subdivisions! There, developers should change some things in blender!

Hi, thanks for the report. Similar freeze due to asset preview generation is fixed in recent builds.
Can you check in 4.1?: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

No, because you can not install 4.0.1, while 4.0.2 is already installed!

I found out, that deactivating a bunch of addons, solves the problem, too.

I kept my assets, but put a lot of my addons off.

I don't know, if only a specific addon is causing the problem, or the sheer
number of active addons, killed the functionality of the subdivision-function.

I also have installed 4.1 Beta and had the same problem, too, so blender is
still not able to handle the subdivisions, if many addons are active, even with
128 GB RAM, a Threadripper 3970X and a RTX 4090 OC inside! The RAM-use was far
from being at the limit, never using more than 4 GB! Please overlook the RAM-use of
Blender in future releases, so people with hardcore-machines, will have a benifit of
their investment at blender, too!

I bought a lot of addons and assets at blendermarket, so you have a profit of that, too.

I would love to be able, not to choose, what addon to activate and what addon to switch off,
while working with blender. Can you make that possible, please?

Many thanks for your efforts!

Best regards,

Ingo
