System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 537.58

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.2, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-12-05 07:41, hash: 9be62e85b727
as well as
version: 4.2.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2024-03-16 19:16, hash: 6768ded89586

Worked: unknown

Short description of error
Entering sculpting mode forces smooth normals within sculpt mode. This is both true for explicitly "marked sharp" edges and "auto smoothed" sharpened edges. The normals return to their intended sharpness once sculpt mode is exited or ANY active modifier is present while in sculpt mode. (Triangulation, armature, ANY active modifier or the newer "Smooth by angle" modifier)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Given a blank scene.
  2. Have an object with either manually marked sharp edges or auto-smoothed edges.
  3. Entering sculpt mode causes the normals to be rendered as smooth.
  4. If any valid modifier is present, the mesh renders correctly.
  5. If you get back out of sculpt mode, the mesh renders correctly.
behavior seems the same in 3.6, 4.0 and 4.2.

Attached video shows of said behavior.

If I understand this correctly, It would be enough to enable shade smooth by angle and go to sculpt mode with default cube?

Correct. Autosmooth a cube, go to sculpt mode and it renders smooth, even after interacting with it using any sort of sculpt brushes

I can confirm, however this issue has been reported before, see:
#103889: Object Data Properties, Normals, Auto Smooth Angle not working in Sculpt

It appears to be a known limitation at the moment. It probably works like this for the sake of performance.
I will merge reports. Please subscribe in #103889 if you want to see further updates
