Bright objects in Raw HDR will appear black #119606

Short description of error
When a extremely bright object is on screen, and HDR is enabled, with the RAW view transform, then the object will appear black.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Download the .blend file below and entered rendered viewport on a HDR compatible Mac. Or follow these steps below:

  1. Create a scene that has a really bright object. For example:
    • Add a sun texture to the world shader.
    • Change the render engine to Cycles so the sun disk will render properly.
    • Increase the sun intensity if needed.
  2. In the Render Properties panel change the Color Mangement -> View Transform setting to Raw.
  3. Change the viewport to a rendered view mode. Notice how the bright object is white.
  4. Enable HDR in the Render Properties panel under Color Mangement -> Display -> High Dynamic Range (Requires a compatible Mac). Notice how the bright object is now black.

There was a report for something similar a while ago. It impacted all platforms in SDR.

Either I am not able to reproduce on Intel Mac, or I am doing this wrong. Can you upload .blend file so I can double check?

I have attached a .blend file to the original report. Just open it and change to rendered viewport mode on a Mac that supports HDR.

As you already mentioned, this may be limited to Apple Silicon Macs, or specific generations of Apple Silicon Macs.

I can confirm.

The problem does not appear immediately; the mouse needs to be outside the Blender window or stationary within Blender for about 3 seconds.
