System Information
Operating system:Any
Graphics card:Any

Blender Version
Broken: (4.0.2, 4.1.0)

Setting the grid scale in the 3d viewport yields unreliable results depending on whether you are in orthographic or perspective view.

Instructions:

  1. In a new blend file, set the system units to Metric with a length in millimeters.
  2. Set the viewport's grid scale value to 19.05 (19.05mm is 3/4")
  3. Create an empty, plain axes
  4. Set the increment snap to Absolute Grid Snap
  5. With snapping turned on, try to move the empty one detent which should be 19.05mm in both perspective and orthographic.

The results will be different for both. (Works in ortho but not in persp)

If the argument is that the grid scale is in meters, try the same test again with 0.01905 in the Grid Scale field.

Sidenote; grid line subdivisions has been greyed out and useless for a while so just remove it from the popover.

Solution: Make the Grid Scale field a proper Distance/Length property so that units are converted to meters behind the curtain and only snap to that increment without subdividing the value.

On the orthographic side view, the snap is made to the grid resolution (millimeters, centimeters ou Feet, Inches if you use Imperial).
This is old behavior in Blender and is by design.
Basically, the snap follows the grid drawing, if you see the grid then you can snap to it.

Make the Grid Scale field a proper Distance/Length property so that units are converted to meters behind the curtain and only snap to that increment without subdividing the value.
