Subdividing a plane with overlapping faces created via Grid Fill crashes Blender #120143

Short description of error
Using the Grid Fill operation on a simple plane can create 2 overlapping faces, both of which connected to the same 4 vertices. If you then use the Subdivide operation on this in edit mode, and increase the number of cuts to 3, Blender crashes.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open attached blend file
  • Press Ctrl+E > Subdivide
  • In the bottom left operator panel, increase the number of cuts to 3
  • Blender crashes

Thanks for the report.
The mesh you provided seems to have duplicate faces, which is invalid and shouldn't be allowed in Blender.
We are aware of this issue and the crash that occurs when using subdivision on such meshes.
This was reported already in #70977: "Dissolve can create duplicate faces / invalid geometry (leading to crashes on further modeling operators such as Subdivide Edges)."
