When viewing armature in Object Mode, if you centre it in the viewport, it will center including all hidden bones, not only bones visible.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open attached file
  • In 3D viewport, Run View > Frame Selected

It centers view to 2 bones, but only 1 is visible.

Hold on... it appears to be a little more complicated. As the .blend is attached, you won't see the correct behaviour in pose mode. In pose mode, you must unhide the hidden layer, highlight all bones, unhighlight all bones, hide the hidden bone again.

So it looks like it has something to do with selection... as though the hidden layer's bone is somehow selected. If I can get a better sense of this, I'll update this bug.

No matter what, though, in object mode when you try to centre, you can never get just the visible bone centred in the view. You must enter pose mode, highlight the bone, then centre.

I have checked attached .blend file, and no matter what I do, the bone is centered when I press home key. Can you check if this happens with factory settings? Or am I doing something wrong perhaps?

I might be using wrong words. The right thing to say is "frame selected" which might be Home, or might be something else. On my system, "Home" is mapped to frame all objects in the scene. So here, let me attach an MP4 of what's happening.

First, I frame selected. The bone is at the top. Then I go into Pose Mode, then I unhide the hidden bone. It is also selected, as you can see. I unselect all. Then I hide the hidden bone again. Then I frame selected in Pose Mode with the one visible bone selected, and it fills the viewport. Then I go back to Object Mode, then I Frame Selected one last time, and the bone goes to the top again (meaning the hidden de-selected bone is considered part of the selection).

Thanks for clarification, I can confirm this. The code does not attempt to exclude hidden bones. Now I am not sure if this is intentional behavior. Wouldn't say it is inconsistent with other object types though. @dr.sybren Can you share your opinion?

Eeh was updating report, when I noticed, that this is regression. So will confirm.
