EEVEE-Next: Orthographic viewport performance drop with transparent object at close range

Things required to trigger performance hit

  • Material Preview or Rendered mode.
  • Orthographic view.
  • Enable scene shadow eevee.use_shadow
  • Have transparent object using Blended render method.
  • Viewing object at close range (view clip dependent)

Changing view clip to be smaller (0.001-100) makes this problem go away.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
From default startup

  1. Select default cube.
  2. Scale down to 0.1 (20cm^3)
  3. Go into orthographic view.
  4. Lower material alpha.
  5. Set render method to Blended.
  6. View select on cube (`,s)
    this should put the view real close to the cube.
  7. Move view around while in ortho (shift,mouse-middle)
  8. Compare performance in perspective.

I think the build date in report description is incorrect.

I can reproduce this delayed-like motion, but it's rather when zoomed out. when zoomed in it is bit choppy. I am using AMD RX550 GPU now, since my 3060 broke.

I guess I can confirm though.

I think the build date in report description is incorrect.

Sample file is saved with latest daily but date in description is for the oldest alpha on archive that I tested with. Did not put commit hash since I can't find a working version.

Here is a file with a sun light. Which is easier to debug than the automatic extracted sun light.

Here orthographic sunlight shadowing is broken and in the video too. So it is surely related to that.

So I think this has to do with the shadow tile tagging resolution when there is a lot of tiles to cover.

We might want to look at better alternative to this.

The performance drop occurs as early as (2024-02-07) fbf47b9a126a without world light or any light object, way before implementing sunlight extraction. So I believe this viewport performance bug and sunlight might be separated issue.

Just for the record, I cannot reproduce the issue on AMD. So, likely to be Hardware specific.
