System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22631-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 552.12

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.3.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2024-06-22 23:23, hash: 4547260bdadc

Short description of error
Expand overlap mode gets a red outline, even though the operation is legal:

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Add two strips.
Switch to Expand mode.
Drag the handle of the left strip over the right strip.

Notice: The strip gets a red outline, even though when releasing, the timeline is correctly organized.
Expected behaviour: No red outline, since the operation is legal.

In Overlap mode, the strips also overlap, but here doesn't the strip get a red outline?

The red color only means there is overlap, not that this operation is illegal. Can keep this open as known issue, but don't plan on changing this without design

The red color only means there is overlap, not that this operation is illegal.

In Overwrite mode, the strip is also overlapping, but doesn't get a red outline? This is not a consistent color marking?

Red will always be interpreted as a warning. Red is used when media is missing, and in this situation it will be interpreted as an illegal operation. It simply doesn't make sense. It is a legal operation.

I am not sure what Overlap mode is. Do you mean Overwrite?

I think the current idea is that red outline means the system will doe further adjustments on top of what artists inputs are.
In the Overwrite mode strips might be overlapping, but nothing will move in time: the strip will be moved to the desired place, overlapping areas will be "eaten away", and nothing else moves.
In the other two modes both the modified or some other strips might get affected by confirming the transform action, hence the visual feedback "hey, something else is going to happen".
